About the Derby
Artists of all ages and skill levels are invited to participate in the Florida Derby Poster Contest, an open-call, juried competition celebrating the history and pageantry of the Florida Derby at Gulfstream Park.
First run in 1952, the Florida Derby is regarded as the nation’s premier race for 3-year-old Thoroughbreds. In 67 Runnings, the race has produced 24 Kentucky Derby winners and countless champions.
Along with the running of the race, the Florida Derby is surrounded by a week of activities and events celebrating horses and local and national non-profit organizations. The Derby’s history includes numerous celebrities attending the race as well as loved champions like Barbaro, Unbridled, Holy Bull, Spectacular Bid, Northern Dancer and Needles.
The Derby takes place at Gulfstream Park in the shadow of Pegasus, a 110-foot bronze sculpture - the largest of its kind – which has become the focal point of Gulfstream and The Village at Gulfstream Park.
